Where a rubble skip can stand
Driveway or road: the City rule
A skip on your own driveway, yard or paving needs no City permit. A skip on a public road, pavement or verge needs the prior written permission of the City of Cape Town, according to the City's Streets, Public Places and Prevention of Noise Nuisances By-law, 2007, section 10, which counts the verge as part of the road.
The application is a Temporary Use (of the road reserve) form, handed in at the Roads Infrastructure Management district office. The admin fee is R712 for 2026/27, and the City can ask for a refundable deposit. There is no online application.
Rubble skips go to all three areas: skip hire Southern Suburbs, skip hire Atlantic Seaboard and skip hire Deep South.
Rubble skip questions
Who loads the rubble into the skip?
You or your builder load the rubble. Darwin Skip Hire brings the skip and takes it away again, which keeps the price at R900 with disposal included.
How much rubble fits in a mini skip?
Two cubic metres. Rubble is heavy, so a skip of broken brick and concrete weighs far more than one of garden refuse. Fill to the rim and check on WhatsApp first when the load is mostly soil or solid concrete.
Can rubble and other waste share a skip?
Yes. Mixed loads of rubble, old fittings, offcuts and household junk are fine. Keep asbestos, liquids, paint and chemicals out.
